Pittsburgh Drum and Bass Collective & Obvious Productions present: KASRA (Critical Music // UK)

KASRA is a gatekeeper to what is under the surface in drum & bass. He does what he does with passion and care, and is a staple in Drum and Bass culture. He began as a DJ and worked his way into the world of production when he started his Critical Music label.  Conceived back in 2002 in a front room in north London, the label has grown from a simple idea driven by a commitment to putting out the best music the scene has to offer; it has now become one of the most well respected underground dance music labels in the UK. Nurturing new talent and releasing some of the freshest breaks and beats from the likes of Break, Rockwell, Breakage, Cyantific, Marcus Intalex, S.P.Y, Calibre, Total Science and many more. It has gone on to build a loyal following around the world, driven on by Kasra’s never ending quest to release quality underground bass music. Most notably, Kasra was featured on Critical Music’s Sequence One EP, which included collabs with S.P.Y. and Jubei. Critical Music is now a resident at the legendary Fabric nightclub in the UK, with Kasra given the highest honor of recording Fabric Live 62, one of his most prominent releases.  Since his first forays into drum & bass in the late 1990’s as a burgeoning young DJ, there’€™s no doubt that Kasra has now made an indelible mark on the scene, a mark that continues to grow ever-stronger as his Critical Music empire prospers.

Obvious is proud to present the DIGITAL MYSTIKZ tour.  We have brought them both individually in the past, and could not be more excited to have the opportunity to bring them back TOGETHER.  For their second time in Pittsburgh, Mala and Coki will be blessing us with a 3 HOUR TAG TEAM SET.  We are honored to be hosting these legends again. Get ready for a night built on deep, dark bass and vibes.  After Party TBA

The Digital Mystikz, comprised of Mala and Coki, have been making music together since they were teenagers in South London. Both were at the very beginning of the dubstep wave, and are influential godfathers to the deep bass sound.

For those that have been fortunate to see Mala perform live, his performance is often described as “spiritual” and “special”. Mala has a very deep connection with sound and an innate ability to create meditative frequencies and harmonics that unify and connect those who listen in a very powerful way. His most recent album, “Mala in Cuba”, gained international acclaim, crossing over into many genres. His label, DEEP MEDi, has released influential tracks from artists such as Goth-Trad, Truth, Loefah, Skream, and Mark Pritchard to name a few.

Coki brings creativity to the table with mind boggling sounds and an aggressive feel. Heavily influenced by the 90’s jungle scene, his sound often flips the music world on its head while keeping the communal vibe based on passionate, explosive crowd reactions. His sound compliments Mala’s meditative, organic, heavy-bass perfectly. Together with Mala, he runs the UK’s premier dubstep night, DMZ, that is known around the world for its incredible talent and heavy bass.

She Diva Died. & Come Again? @ Kelly Strayhorn Theater

She Diva Died @ Kelly Strayhorn Theater

She Diva Died. & Come Again?
be/he/me (myth) multi-medi(v)a retro/speculative motherhood art.
Including MR. OWL dance party on Fri Sept 13th after Christina’s Q&A
Thurs Sept 12th & Fri Sept 13th, 8pm @ Kelly Strayhorn Theater

After 10 years of relative quiet and minimal artistic activity, Christina Springer returns to the Pittsburgh arts scene as both a presenter and performer. This multi-media performance incorporates text, sound, image and movement to portray the battle between the artist and the mother. The show particularly examines identity as it relates to raising a Black man.

In 2002, Springer stepped off the Pittsburgh arts community stage to raise her son. She and Christiane Leach had been running a non-profit arts organization, Sun Crumbs which produced over 50 programs annually.

More information about Springer is on her website: www.christinaspringer.com. Her 1999 CD, “In The Image Of Angels” has sold over 800 copies and is available for free download at www.soundcloud.com/christina-springer. You’ll also find teasers and outtakes for “She Diva Died & Come Again.”
