Timebomb & Dominant Force present SUMMER TIME BOMBING, Mixed by MR. OWL

Graffiti is the first of hip-hop’s five elements. And this is true for Timebomb as well. Before there was a store, a booming website, an MTV countdown hosted inside, or features in Wiz Khalifa’s and Mac Miller’s video there was rush of the late night bombing mission and the million and one close calls that happen when a crew takes on an entire city with markers and cans for fame.

DJ Mr. Owl helps the fans remember these roots with a 77 minute conceptual blockbuster homage to street art and the fearless writers and vandals who make it happen in the trenches nightly. This end to end burner car pulls out of the station and into Timebomb on the 16th of August where fans of the art and the culture can get hard copies and limited edition t-shirts and stickers. Anyone who listens to this tape will have the mental ammo to be a king. If you slack on it then you might just be a toy so make sure you’re there.  To honor the Mixtape and our roots Timebomb Shop is going to have a Summer Time Bombing Sale all day Thursday Aug 16th so stop by if you’re in the Pittsburgh Area.

MR. OWL – ‘They Don’t Care About Little Birds’ Mixtape

The year is 2011. Corporate greed is hell bent on exterminating the pesky underground musicians who are cutting into the profits of the major labels. They don’t care about little birds, including Mr. Owl – and they don’t want you to care either – “ignore owls or lose job” as they put it. This mixtape tells the story of the struggle of true heads against the bigwigs who want to destroy all real shit. Bulldozing creativity from coast to coast, they intend to wipe out the natural beauty of our audible world and replace it with the musical equivalent of tourist hotels, strip malls, and pancake houses. “You gotta start thinking like an outlaw” if you want to fight back. Spectacular selections from 26 of the dopest artists worldwide constitute the resistance. Listen to this mixtape, because the very future of underground music is at stake. “Ladies and gentlemen, these kids are a little misguided, they have no proof of any owls. Do you folks see any owls? Because I don’t!” Yes, we do see owls. And we know that the powers-that-be are scared of what’s to come.

CASCADE RECORDS is very proud to present CR podcast 38 mixed by DJ SPAED from Pittsburgh, United States.

Welcome to steel city Pittsburgh, the city of our guest, DJ SPAED! A place where life is good for a lover of great HIPHOP. I also invite you to pick up the latest LP from J RAWLS “The Hip-Hop Affect” if you haven’t already done so! This mix is a pure deejaying and scratching lesson with only nothing but news and exclusive beats from Spaed himself – it is exactly what we needed today!! Let yourself be rocked by this moment of pure Scratch&Beat Action! What’up  DJ SPAED !?

CR – Where are you from?
DJ SPAED – I hail from the city of champions, the steel city, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania USA. Important in my taste and style developments, it’s a six hour drive to either NYC or Toronto, and even closer to other bangin east coast cities, which has made my underground music lifestyle very rich and rewarding. I really enjoy living here and feel lucky, rated america’s most “livable” city multiple times in recent years. It’s always been home, and home to some pioneers and legends in music and art scenes respectively, which I’ve been surrounded with my entire life.

CR – When did you begin to make music?
DJ SPAED – At a very very young age.. My father had a good friend who stored a huge 20-some piece kit in our garage who toured the world doing drum seminars, and I got on the sticks after school most days as a pre-teen while my parents worked. It didn’t hurt that my parents vinyl collection was ridiculous, and they had a deep love and appreciation of music of all kinds. Soon after, I was making electronic music on an Atari 800 “pc” with a program called “music composer”, sequencing and the whole nine, we’re talking I was 12 years old type shit. I often feel born into what I now spend the majority of my free time creating with, sequenced music made with computer software and computer based hardware systems. As an adult I learned the ASR-10 and then bought an MPC2000xl when that came out, used it for years until I lived with a guy that had the latest greatest production software at all times, I was transformed, and I keep a lot of similar arrangement ideas from my ASR and MPC roots today, there’s still an MPC up in here!

CR – Who or what has influenced you thus far?
DJ SPAED – Wait for the book to come out dog, that answers a novel, straight up. But on some compressed answer shit, watching what Kool Herc did and everyone that followed his lead, very important, and seeing certain dj’s and groups playing live at huge events at an early age. Life and experience remain as important as all of my musical influences as well.

CR – What represents HipHop in your life?
DJ SPAED – I won’t go too crazy with a philosophical long drawn out answer for this one, because I could could easily speak on this topic for hours, but simply put hip hop is not just a fad or musical style, it is an absolute living breathing entity, a lifestyle of consciousness and positivity. Watching what the pioneers did and flipping it is how I’m representing “with” hip hop in my life. Mastery of digging for and producing music, djing and writing graffiti morphed and molded me into this kind of person that can’t live without being knee deep in this shit, and it is a part of defining who I am and who I can identify with. However, I hate to be labeled as another “joe hip hop” cat, yeah that’s that hip hop guy, which couldn’t be further from the truth, because there are people that have expected that from me playing at hip hop clubs for years and I have so many musical taste changes and the variation of what I listen to at any given time it’s insane, which I find true music lovers that have beats for years have in common with me a lot of times. Why not go ahead and no holds barred throw on just about anything and appreciate it for what it is. New and interesting progressions in music production excite me in general, and always have, and a lot of these styles take from and are deeply influenced by hip hop’s musical contributions. Inexorably, hip hop is who I am, and a whole lot of other shit is who I am, is basically what I’m conveying here.

CR – Your 3 all-time greatests in music?
DJ SPAED – Rakim, Stereolab, Lee Scratch Perry.. I wish I was asked for 300 all time greats, but yeah those 3 are unanimous with me, myself, and I.

CR – Can you describe your mix for CR?
Really forward thinking and groundbreaking new music laced by a real dj, that’s all. Kept it within a certain BPM range twisting and tangling styles that are not always similar , the music re-describes itself as it changes. I included a lot of recent music I have made, and most of the selections tend to have attributes that tie in well together, yet may be atypical for a lot of other dj’s to try and mesh with. It’s dope, and yall can’t mesh with it, sike nah lol..

CR – What are your new musical projects?
DJ SPAED – We have a label we’ve created called Dominant Force right now, Mr. Owl and myself scouting new talent and have been working with a lot of talented individuals already for years. In addition we have been throwing parties which showcase a specific genre, examples being a reggae night, a funk and soul night, an underground and golden age hip hop night, a various progressive genres of cutting edge electronica night, etc. etc. Staying on the dj circuit doing underground shit that matters and has integrity, and making LOTS of beats. Have another release in the works with Jack Wilson, working on songs on an individual basis with a few other mc’s and looking for new talent to collab with at all times! I have an amazing space and a good deal of free time, and it is a great opportunity to put a lot of work into my art right now, and it’s really been gangbusters in 2011 so far. I see myself taking progressive and new styles even further with my own instrumental production work, at the end of the rainbow there’s another rainbow, nahlmsayin?! Check us out at dominantforce.wordpress.com/

CR – Special Shouts?
DJ SPAED – I wanna give a stupid doo doo slurp out to every one that provides me with the inspiration to keep me in a world of my own by making great music for the world to enjoy, so this goes out to all of the artists I enjoy and respect around the world! Also sending this jahn out to the clubs we affiliate with, the bartenders that keep me right, everyone that gets me that high quality Dr. Dre, Nahmiln! Annum out!!

MR. OWL & Punch3nello: “I’m Different” Single Released

Punch3nello is doing big things in Miami right now, and as such we have decided to release another single off of his much-anticipated upcoming EP “Sun Rays & Grays”!

“I’m Different (aka. Clouds Disperse)” is a funky Mr. Owl production that harkens back to the early days of hip-hop, where things were about having fun, feeling good, and getting your life right.  The concept of the beat is the calm beauty after a rainstorm, when the clouds disperse and everything comes into focus.  Punch tells the story of where he came from and his current jetsetting lifestyle as a musician and mural artist.  Take a listen and you’ll understand why this dude is developing such heavy buzz!

Mr. Jhak – Bodyslide Mixtape

Mr. Jhak is the first emcee signed to Mr. Owl’s “Parliament of Strix” record label, and the Bodyslide Mixtape is Jhak’s first release.  Born and raised in Philly, and currently living in Los Angeles, he blends the east- and west-coast styles to make some of the realest underground hip-hop you’ve ever heard.  Jhak spits his intensely original rhyme style on twenty-one of his favorite borrowed instrumentals, and DJ Spaed cuts and blends all the tracks into a 54 minute set of continuous illness, never letting the groove stop.

Let this mixtape whet your appetite for a dope and prolific up-and-coming emcee, because P-Strix will be releasing several Mr. Jhak albums and mixtapes soon, including the highly anticipated “Who Killed the Page Wizurd?” LP with all original production by Mr. Owl.  Keep your ears open because this dude is on fire!

MR. OWL – ‘The Higher Mental Plane’ Hip-Hop Mixtape

Mr. Owl’s hottest mixtape yet!  This jawn features all songs with the word “high” in the title, as well as some philosophically-oriented vocal samples sprinkled here and there that frame the “political” concepts of the mixtape… as usual the steelo is both fun and thought-provoking, and most importantly nothing but the dopest of tracks!

MR. OWL & Punch3nello: “Stagger Home” Single Released

Our homie Punch3nello from Miami was passing through Pittsburgh, came through Mr Owl’s studio yesterday, and recorded a seven-track EP “Sun Rays & Grays” in one killer session.  This brother is the one-take truth – his freestyle game is interplanetary.  Mr Owl contributes six of the beats, and Spaed produced the seventh.

It will be some time before the final mix & master is completed, but here’s a one-track preview of the heat that’s coming!  “Stagger Home” is a punchy, jazzy jewel that – like many of Mr Owl’s most recent productions – pays homage to his favorite 70s jazz & funk vinyl.  Punch wrecks it with flows to make your head spin… the sixteens just keep coming and coming.

“Ya need to get pumped with embalming fluid
You’re already dead for tryin’ to do it
I breathe life into it
My confluence like the three rivers
Rhyme patterns i deliver
Pittsburgh, we don’t mix words”

Jack Wilson & DJ SPAED – Fame EP

If you are only going to listen to 15 minutes of new music all year, this is the EP.  Five underground hip-hop bangers with a new level of the classic Spaed sound and Jack Wilson’s unrelenting delivery on overdrive.  This album is a modern hip-hop masterpiece, and the latest addition to both artists’ prolific catalogs.  Free download for a limited time!

“Steel City MC Jack Wilson is back with the brief mixtape/EP Fame, enlisting Pittsburgh turntablist DJ Spaed to produce a challenging, dynamic collection of beats.  ”P & LE” possesses the most shadowy, sinister beat of them all,  coiling like cool smoke underneath Wilson’s tongue-twisting rhymes. This is pure mix tape nirvana: no hook, no pauses, just some muscular, spartan production and an MC who refuses to take a breath.”
